A recent article written by Paul Waugh for the British newspaper
Daily Mail Online reports that a study has found that some airlines, banks and department stores are practising sexist policies when they force female employees to wear high heels at work as part of a dress code.
The report was called...you guessed it, 'Working feet and footwear' It suggests that a number of big companies require female staff who deal with the public wear slip-on shoes or high heels. Worker's unions are calling for a change to these policies that will allow women wear what they find comfortable, suggesting that wearing stiletto heels for prolonged periods can lead to health problems. (apparently they didn't read the recent study that said wearing stilettos can improve orgasms)
Far be it for me, a big promoter of stiletto heel shoes, to suggest that I agree with the union's stance on this one, but I do...but not necessarily for the same reasons.
I am not a fan of dress codes of any type unless you are in a job that requires a uniform, and even then I believe there should be some flexibility allowed. I don't agree that an employer should be able to force the wearing of stiletto heels even though I love stiletto heels and the women who wear them. But I do sympathize with a woman working in a place like a department store, on her feet all day, having to wear high stilettos. It's got to be murder on the back, legs and feet. She should have the option of wearing....ugh...ugly flat shoes if she wants to....but she should also be allowed to go topless if she wants as well....but that is just me....
The other side of this argument is, if a woman is forced to wear stilettos while at work, she may not wear them out shopping or at a nightclub in the evening after work, which would be a pity. A change is as good as a rest after all. Women forced to wear heels at work are liable to come home and take them off....not good....
It's like the plumber who comes home from work at night, showers and puts on dress pants and a clean shirt, while his neighbor, the banker, comes home in a suit and tie and changes into a scruffy pair of worn blue jeans and a tee shirt....
I think it's time that employers back off and allow women the right to wear whatever they choose for footwear, if they don't like it, don't look down....
