Women's high heel shoes have been popular for several hundred years. According to several sources I was able to find, Catherine de Medici (Queen of France)in the 16th century is credited with being the first women to make this style fashionable and they remained in vogue throughout her life.
Catherine was petite in stature and wanted something to make her appear taller, high shoes under her long dresses, gave her that height. So in the beginning, high heels were to worn to increase a person's stature or height.
At the same time men in the French Court began to wear high heeled shoes and continued to do so for another two centuries until after the French Revolution. Perhaps it's fair to say that in addition to the French Revolution, there was also the High Heel Shoe Revolution.
Stiletto heels were invented in Italy and became very popular in the 1950s. One of the reasons for the longevity of stilettos is that not only were they popular with women, men encouraged their women to wear them, and still do.
Today, thanks to movies, fashion and to some degree pornography, women's stiletto heels have become known as much for their erotic or fetish appeal, although the fact that they create height goes hand in hand with that.
